Freedom isn’t free (original)

I made this painting a few years ago. I longed for the nature where I grew up—the sight of the open sea, the soaring eagle. To not be tied to everyday chores, but simply to walk toward the sea. With salty wind pounding my face and my clothes flapping around me. Forgetting time. Asking the waves.

Today, freedom is being challenged in a different way. Dark clouds clog the horizon. Powerful leaders of the world behave like unruly children in a kindergarten, fighting over toys. I wish for the women of the world to step forward as mothers, and men to step forward as fathers, —teaching children of all ages to love one another, to wish each other peace and joy, to give rather than take.

I still long for the sea, for the wind and the waves. But now I ask everyone to embrace and protect peace in every possible way—and, through that, freedom.
