As the opening of my latest exhibition draws near, I wanted to take a moment to share the story behind its title, Paint Me a Sparkling Thursday (“Mal meg en sprudlende torsdag”). While the exhibition itself is an exploration of joy, choice, and the beauty of embracing life’s vibrant colors, its name is rooted in a poem I wrote over 20 years ago.
The poem, Sprudlende tirsdag (Sparkling Tuesday), was written during a time of reflection and possibility. It’s a playful yet profound invitation to look inward and outward, to explore the hues of life—both literal and metaphorical—and to celebrate the act of creating meaning through the choices we make each day. Here is the poem, translated into English:
Sparkling Tuesday
Paint me a tone in blue and gold
Paint me the color of your smileShow me the hue of your thought and the dream, if you dare
Show me a tone without color (does it exist?)
and a color without graceShow me the dream
and the root of your lifePaint me a sparkling Tuesday
Choose the color for today
Choose yellow for love, if you dare
When I rediscovered this poem a few months ago, it felt like a message from my younger self, a quiet nudge reminding me of something essential: the power of choosing our own palette in life. The playful question in the poem—“Show me a tone without color (does it exist?)”—challenges us to see the interconnection of all things, how emotion, thought, and action blend together to create our unique “colors.”
The title shifted to Paint Me a Sparkling Thursday to honor the opening day of the exhibition, but its spirit remains the same. It’s about creating space for joy, about daring to express who we are in a world that often tries to define us. The exhibition reflects this journey, with works that range from serene simplicity to vibrant, layered complexity—a celebration of life’s spectrum and the courage it takes to embrace our unique “colors.”
